Privilegia, with its growing multinational population, is a gated archipelago of enclaves and intrigues that sells out to impresarios and the nouveau-faux when the prices skyrocket over the skyscrapers and investments fever and falter. We nanny their children, give them warm towels, refresh their designer drinks, and deliver desserts decorated like impressionist art. We yield as they ready themselves to descend the grand staircase. As they turn their backs to us, our hands slam together like suicidal birds, the applause landing like broken promises on their shoulders, the wing-thrum like thunder ahead of a coming storm.
